When are you entitled to refreshments?

With the summer season comes a rising number of flight delays. Few passengers know that each delay gives you the right to compensation in the form of refreshments, and also financial compensation if your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours – starting at a minimum of EUR 250.

The right to refreshments does not arise automatically with every delay. The delay must reach at least 2 hours from the scheduled departure time. At that point, the airline is obliged to provide refreshments appropriate to the length of the waiting time. If your departure is postponed by one day, you are also entitled to overnight accommodation!

In most cases at Prague Airport, the airline provides each passenger with a voucher worth CZK 105. It can be used in the airport canteen between the terminals, or after security in Terminal 1.

When are you entitled to financial compensation?

Was your flight delayed by three hours or more? Under EU regulations, you are entitled to financial compensation:

  • EUR 250 if the delay is 3 hours or more and the flight distance is less than 1,500 km

  • EUR 400 if the delay is 3 hours and the flight distance is 1,500–3,500 km

  • EUR 600 if the delay is 3 hours or more and the flight distance exceeds 3,500 km

The right to financial compensation does not apply in the event of so-called extraordinary circumstances, such as severe weather, airport strikes, unrest at the final destination, or a bird strike. But beware: airlines often misuse this excuse to avoid paying passengers what they are entitled to.
